Historical Significance

Alberta's badlands are one of the richest sources of Late Cretaceous fossils in the world, and T. rex is among the dinosaurs that lived there. The Mint's Dinosaur Collection celebrated that fossil heritage, and this 2009 issue had a worldwide mintage of 20,000. The obverse carries Susanna Blunt's effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
