1986-S U.S. Statue of Liberty Proof Silver Dollar – Ellis Island, in Original Mint Box

The 1986-S Statue of Liberty proof silver dollar was struck at the San Francisco Mint for the Statue of Liberty's centennial. The side shown here features the statue in front of the Ellis Island immigration building, with the words "Ellis Island, Gateway to America".

It sits in its capsule in the original blue velvet U.S. Mint case with the red, white and blue ribbon, the outer box and the Mint's letter.

Historical Significance

In 1986 the United States issued its Liberty coins for the statue's 100th anniversary. The Mint's letter explains that these were the first U.S. coins to depict the Statue and Ellis Island, and that part of the price of each coin went to an endowment for their restoration. More than 6.4 million proof silver dollars were struck.
